Learn continuous jump-rope swing crosses

Turn each crossed clearance into the next side swing, so the pattern can alternate without an open jump between the crosses.

My first continuous swing crosses had the correct hands and the rhythm of somebody moving house through a revolving door. I was trying to jump every turn while deciding which hand owned the roof. Walking the swings gave my brain enough time to finish one job before the next box arrived.

The missing open jump is the point

An ordinary swing–cross can finish by reopening both hands for an open clearance. A continuous swing cross takes a different exit: after the crossed clearance, one hand stays and one hand returns, turning that cross directly into the next side swing. The pattern becomes swing–cross–swing–cross rather than swing–cross–open.

Freeze the handover before chasing the flow

Give each hand one next job

  1. Begin with a swing–cross you can make on either side and a crossover with either hand on top. Swing–Cross and Crossover are both prerequisites for this lesson.
  2. Finish one right-side swing–cross and identify the top hand and the lower hand before reopening anything.
  3. Keep the top hand on its crossed side. Return only the lower hand towards its own hip until the two hands meet uncrossed on the opposite side.
  4. Use that same-side hand position for the next side swing. Picture the rope passing your ear, and use that image to guide the hand on the swing side across to become the top hand in the next cross.
  5. Pause again after the crossed clearance, name which hand stays and which hand returns, then rebuild the route in the other direction.

The exchange alternates. A right-side swing feeds a right-hand-on-top cross; the lower hand returns and builds the left-side swing. That left swing then feeds a left-hand-on-top cross. The words are deliberately repetitive because the hands are doing a repetitive job, not improvising a new trick every turn.

Walk the swings and jump the crosses

Slow the decisions before adding every jump

  1. Make one crossed clearance, then walk the following side swing instead of jumping it.
  2. During the slow swing, say ‘top stays, lower home’ and watch the hands become uncrossed on one side.
  3. Jump the next crossed clearance, walk the next side swing and repeat the hand exchange in the other direction.
  4. When the route remains readable, add the jumps during the side swings without changing the hand order.
  5. Finish the short phrase deliberately by reopening after the final cross, rather than waiting for a catch to choose the ending.

When the flow turns into weather

Find the hand that moved without a job

  1. An open jump appears between the crosses: freeze after one cross and check whether both hands returned. Keep the top hand in place and move only the lower hand.
  2. The hands stay crossed during the side swing: walk the swing and give the lower hand a clear return towards its own hip.
  3. The same swing side keeps returning: say the next swing side before moving the lower hand, then stop after one exchange.
  4. One direction collapses: return to the isolated swing–cross on that side and check its matching top-hand order.
  5. The whole pattern becomes too fast to inspect: remove the swing jumps again. Jump the crosses, walk the swings and name the two hand jobs aloud.
